Improvement of Lightning Protection Design of 150 kV Transmission Lines inWest Sumatra in Indonesia PR
Lightning activity in Indonesia is very high, and lightning trip-outs of the transmission line frequently occur. In this paper, the lightning performance on the 150 kV transmission line in West Sumatra in Indonesia is studied in detail and it is shown that the lightning trip-out rate depends on the lightning activity at the local area, the tower footing resistance, the span length and the length of an arcing horn gap. The observed trip-out rate is in good agreement with the results of the simulation by the IEEE
FLASH program. When the tower-footing resistance at all towers is arranged to be less than 10 and the length of an arcing horn gap is arranged to be 1.2 to 1.3 m, the trip-out rate is expected to decrease to less than half of the present rate.
